Kao-Spen, Kapectolin
Class: Antidiarrheal combination
Action Absorbs fluid, binds and removes digestive tract irritants.
Indications Symptomatic treatment of diarrhea.
Contraindications Use in infants and children < 3 yr without physician guidance; use for > 2 days or in presence of high fever; intestinal obstruction; colitis.
Route/Dosage
All doses are given after each loose bowel movement. ADULTS: PO 60120 ml (regular strength) or 4590 ml (concentrate) after each loose bowel movement. CHILDREN 612 YR: PO 3060 ml (regular strength) or 30 ml (concentrate) per dose. CHILDREN 35 YR: PO 1530 ml (regular strength) or 15 ml (concentrate) per dose.
Interactions
Clindamycin, digoxin, lincomycin penicillamine (oral): Decreased absorption may occur; separate administration times by 24 hr.
Lab Test Interferences None well documented.
Adverse Reactions
GI: Constipation; fecal impaction (especially infants and elderly).
Precautions
Pregnancy: Category B. Lactation: Kaolin and pectin are not absorbed from GI tract; transfer into breast milk is not expected.
PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS
Administration/Storage
- Administer after each loose bowel movement.
- Shake suspension well before pouring.
Assessment/Interventions
- Obtain patient history, including drug history and any known allergies. Note usual bowel patterns and onset of recent condition.
- Conduct complete abdominal assessment, including palpitation and auscultation.
- Assess for signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction, fecal impaction or dehydration; notify physician if present.
- Assess vital signs, especially temperature. Notify physician if increased.
OVERDOSAGE: SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Constipation
Patient/Family Education
- Instruct patient to take medication after each diarrheal or loose stool.
- Advise patient to notify physician if diarrhea persists for more than 48 hr or if fever develops.
- Caution patient not to exceed recommended dosage.
